Hillingdon Judo Club offers free visually impaired sessions

Hillingdon Judo Club, who recently launched a women only session, have secured funding to offer free visually impaired judo sessions at Brunel University from March.

The highly-active Uxbridge outfit has received high praise for its widespread activity as it continues to take the Olympic sport to all areas of the community.

In addition to after school sessions at Holy Trinity CE Primary School and Merchant Taylors the club also hosts a free women only session and a popular West London Randori Fight Night on a Thursday.

The latest addition, an anticipated VI session, will take place at Brunel University’s dance studio will run from Tuesday 8 March at 16:00 – 17:00.

Judo’s close contact makes the Olympic sport an ideal activity for blind or visually impaired players.

The British Judo Association is renowned for its visually impaired setup which includes reigning World Champion Ben Quilter, Coventry brothers Joe and Sam Ingram, who both picked up silver medals at the 2010 IBSA VI World Championships, and talent search product Lesley Reid who captured a bronze medal at the international showpiece.

VI judo in Britain is held in high regard internationally and the continents premier competition, the 2011 IBSA VI European Championships, will take place at the K2 Crawley from Thursday 17 to Saturday 20 November.

The British Judo Association’s Chief Executive Officer, Scott McCarthy, believes the sport can engage and benefit any audience.

“With weight categories, age bands, and clear progression pathways through the grading system judo is sport that truly caters for everyone – regardless of shape, size, gender, ethnicity or ability,” he said.

“The sport has something to offer to anyone who is interested in gaining physical skills, core stability, confidence, strength and discipline. It is an educational platform as well as an Olympic sport.”

Participants are required to pre-register their interest in the VI sessions by contacting Tim Edwards on tim.edwards@britishjudo.org.uk or 0207 928 0888/07814 556518.

Hillingdon Judo Club is based at the Harefield Academy, Uxbridge, UB9 6ET. On a Monday juniors aged 5-15 train at 18:45 – 20:00 while seniors aged 15 and above follow at 20:00 – 21:30. The FREE women’s only session takes place on a Thursday at 18:45 – 20:00 with Randori Fight Night following at 20:00 – 21:30.
