Two senior visually impaired
judo players from Frome Judo Club medalled at the mainstream High
Wycombe event on 16 October.
Silver medallist Liam Harkness
and bronze medallist Anthony Quant, who have been with the club
for 18 months, are both visually impaired but often compete in
regional events against fully sighted competitors.
The players are working
with VI Talent Development Coordinator Ian Rose, who retired this
year after a glittering career which included a Paralympic silver
medal, four European Championship titles and a World Championships
victory.
“The pair are really hard
working and they’re very passionate about judo,” said Rose.
“They’re not letting their
visual impairment stop them in any way and I can see them going
from strength to strength. These results show their talent and
potential which has been aided by working with the England ExCell
sessions ran by Matt Divall and long may their success continue.”
The talented pair also
benefit from training within the excel programme at Bath University
and regularly take to the mat with the Somerset County Squad.

Terry Atkinson, head coach
at Frome Judo Club and Chairman of Somerset County Judo, is delighted
by his students’ progress.
“Liam and Anthony have
made some great strides and their results at High Wycombe shouldn’t
surprise anyone.
“I know what they’re capable
of and they’re just on the brink of really progressing in the
sport.”
Frome Judo Club train at
Frome Leisure Centre, Somerset, BA11 2SA. Juniors and seniors
