Essex judo clubs announce merger

Two of Essex’s top sports clubs, Wickford Judo RYU and Chelmsford Judo Club, have announced that they will merge with immediate effect.

The newly-created Chelmsford and Wickord Judo RYU will boast some highly-distinguished names as 1972 Olympic silver medallist and 9th Dan Dave Starbrook.

Gary Diebelius, a noted 5th Dan, will run the club with support from Terry Adams and Ray Neenan, who both hold a 6th Dan. John McCarthy, a 4th Dan, completes the impressive club roster.

Gary Diebelius said: “We’re delighted to announce the merger and bring together two strong talent pools. The area has always had a good reputation when it comes to judo and I’m sure we can continue to develop talent as well as offer something for those who are looking to try something different and reap the fitness benefits of the sport.

“Everyone is more than welcome to come along and try one of our sessions; we have an open door policy and people of all ages and abilities.”

On a Tuesday (20:00 – 21:45) seniors will train at Anglia Ruskin Community College, Chelmsford, Juniors and seniors will train on a Friday (19:00 – 21:45) at David Lloyd Leisure Centre, Basildon.
