Steel City Judo Kwai receive funding boost

Steel City Judo Kwai have received a cash injection after Sport England passed their funding application and will provide £9,000 to the Shiregreen-based club.

The funding has come through the Sport England Small Grants Programme and will be used to purchase mats and create a new satellite school link. The programme supports local community sport projects which seek to increase participation, sustain participation or develop opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.

Club Chairman Eric Theaker oversaw the club’s bid for funding and believes the Sheffield outfit are now in a position to attract more people to their sessions at the Concord Sports Centre.

“Our aim is to double the size of membership within the next 12 months," he said.

"The funding will enable us to purchase mats and safety equipment and to open a new satellite venue within a school in the North of Sheffield thus expanding the schools initiative that we are currently involved in.”

The Yorkshire club, formerly known as EIS Sheffield, are tirelessly developing their school links as they look to attract the next generation of judo players.

Theaker added: “The school that we have selected to work with is Firth Park School which has recently had a new sports hall built and will give us ideal practice facilities to expand our operation.”

Steel City Judo Kwai shares a purpose built dojo with Sheffield Judo Club which enables them to host a variety of sessions at their leisure.

“The premises are designed for judo and give us a permanent matted area which is available to us at any time for training. Added to these facilities we already have a satellite club at Wisewood School and the new link will be in addition to these facilities.”
