The British University
judo team visited some of Japan’s most famed training centres
and historical venues during a week-long trip in July.
London’s 15-strong touring
party featured players from the clubs at Cambridge University,
arch-rivals Oxford, Imperial College and the University of London.
The trip was led by
officials Tony Sweeney, the head of the British University team,
as well as Joe Doherty and friend Chris Doherty.
Tokai University and Tokyo
University were two of the squad’s regular training centres as
they included sightseeing and visits to the world famous Kodokan
and Jigoro Kano Museum.
“Our main incentive is
the cultural exchange in line with the educational ideals of judo
founder Jigaro Kano,” said Chris Doherty, who runs Oxford University’s
respected club.
The Universities of Oxford
and Cambridge first linked with their Japanese counterparts in
1997 when the London established hosted 20 students.
