Essex’s Wickford Judo Ryu
recently welcomed Olympic bronze medallist and British Judo legend
Brian Jacks to take a special masterclass for both players and
coaches.
Jacks, a four-time Olympian
and World Championship bronze medallist in 1967, earned worldwide
recognition when he took a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games
in Munich.
The fantastic opportunity
for players and coaches alike to work with one of British judo’s
pioneers was greatly received by those in attendance.

The masterclass followed
a visit from another British great in David Starbrook who took
a similar session at the club in March.
Andrew Wilesmith, Eastern
Development Officer for British Judo, said: “Brian was very popular
with the youngsters, seniors and coaches, he’s been there and
achieved success at the highest level which is hugely inspirational
to everyone he trains.
“The club is working hard
to develop opportunities for their members and to host two legends
this year is a great testament to their commitment to furthering
their players experience and access to high level judo.”
Gary Diebelius, Head Coach
at Wickford Judo Ryu, said: “Brian Jacks is an absolute legend
and to have him at the club has been amazing for everyone involved
at Wickford.”
Wickford Judo Ryu train
at the David Lloyd Leisure Centre, Festival Leisure Park Pipps
Hill Road, South Basildon, SS14 3DG, on a Friday at 19:00 – 21:45
as juniors and seniors take to the mat. On a Tuesday seniors train
at Anglia Ruskin Community College, Chelmsford, from 20:00 – 21:45.
