Boston Judo Club taster session attracts 166 pupils

On Wednesday 28 th April 2010 Boston Judo Club linked up with Haven High School to stage their first School 2 Dojo session.

The session was organised by Haven High School Sports Coordinator Liz Leggott and Boston Judo Club Coach Dave Jacklin. The 166 pupils were also instructed by club coaches Richard Gregory, Dave Lovelace and Haven High School pupil Ryan Mitcham who holds a blue belt.

The newly-established link between the club and school will lead to further taster sessions and the club having a presence within the school. The School 2 Dojo Programme is run by the British Judo Association through local judo clubs to establish links with local schools.

Co-organiser Dave Jacklin said: “The one day taster session was only possible thanks to Terri-Ann Elliott, East Midlands Development Officer for the British Judo Association, and Boston Judo Clubs combined efforts in securing almost £ 5,000.00 of funding for the light safe portable judo matting.

“Half of which was provided by the Lincolnshire County Council Community Development Fund (£2,472.50) and the remaining (£2,187.55) of Boston Judo Clubs funds to complete the project.

“Thanks also to pioneering funding from The Fenland Round Table 1116, Lincolnshire Police Property Act Fund, and The Local Network Fund who had provided judo suits for all the students to wear, ensuring equity within the sport, so no one needs to feel excluded from trying Judo with Boston Judo Club.

The Programme is aimed at making the sport accessible for school children and, in turn, generate interest in the sport from potential players.

“The concept is to bring judo to more school age students who may otherwise never give this fantastic Olympic sport a go,” added Jacklin.

“The delivery is fun and we incorporate the disciplines required to safely practice judo.

Easy to learn techniques are chosen to help the students gain in confidence and enjoy fun judo.”

Four groups of boys and four groups of girls were taught from 9.00am till 1.30pm with 15 to 30 students per group which gave them each a 30 minute taster session of judo

“The youngsters received a warm up and were then shown how to do the important break falls with a hold down to finish.

“The students were then given the opportunity to let off steam through a safe controlled competitive element.”

All students from the school were invited to try the Olympic sport of judo with Boston Judo Club.

“With further taster Sessions, short courses and 10 week courses already planned the Boston Judo Clubs School 2 Dojo programme looks set to be very popular with many primary and secondary schools,” said Jacklin.

“The club still require approx 50 or more sponsored judo suits to lend to students on the School 2 Dojo programme.”

The British Judo Association is the National Governing Body for the Olympic Sport of judo in Great Britain.
