Ernest Bevin Boys College
won four awards at the Active Wandsworth Awards 2011 on Wednesday
23 March with their accomplishments in the Olympic sport of judo
contributing three-quarters of their new silverware.
The 14th annual awards
evening honoured local people who have made an outstanding contribution
to sport and physical activity. Awards were presented to athletes,
coaches, volunteers and teams for their exceptional achievements
during 2010 with world champion, Commonwealth Champion and Paralympic
gold medallist Danielle Brown in attendance.
Ernest Bevin’s Phoenix
Judo Club, one of the most well-known in British judo, won Sports
Club of The Year after excelling at events in the capital including
the 2010 London Youth Games for which the club was also presented
with the John WE Davis Award for making the most significant contribution
to the event.

Judo club volunteer
Sandy Lewis was also recognised in the Voluntary Services to Sport
and Physical Activity Category for making a difference in the
community.
Ernest Bevin also claimed
the Team of the Year award which went to the U13s table tennis
club.
P.E teacher and judo
coach Eric Bonti, a former British international and pupil at
the college, said: “We received four awards in total, two
for judo, one for table tennis as well a volunteer award for our
judo club volunteer extraordinaire.
“It was great to receive
recognition from the borough for the pupils achievements. It’s a
testament to the support given by management and greenhouse.
“The boys are chomping
at the bit for more success now.”

Their success follows
Phoenix Judo Club coach Winston Gordon, who’s also a former Ernest
Bevin pupil, being selected for the 2011 European Championships
as he works towards a hat-trick of Olympic appearances at London
2012.
The Athens and Bejing
Olympian, 34, is sponsored by the Greenhouse Project to coach
at the College and also trains at the Budokwai and the British
Judo Performance Institute in Dartford.
British Judo Head Coach
Patrick Roux said: “We’ve just completed a 10-day Olympic Training
Camp in the Czech Republic as 28 countries took part. The European
Judo Union launched the Olympic Training Camp programme at the
British Judo Performance Institute in Dartford last year to prepare
European judoka for 2012.
“We are now heading
to a camp in France where we’ll be joined by judoka from Belgium
and Switzerland.
“As with the World Championships
in September last year countries are able to enter two competitors
per weight category at the European Championships which I think
makes the event stronger. It’s interesting for us as the event
will be one of the last opportunities for players to stake a claim
towards selection for the Olympics next year.
“I think it’s important
to say that while we can now enter two competitors in each weight
at the World and European Championships, we can only enter one
judoka per category at the Olympics.”
