Camberley Judo Club,
the Surrey outfit whose roster features some of Britain’s leading
fighters, will challenge a Welsh select team at the Ashes Dinner,
the club’s annual fundraising presentation, on Thursday 25 November
at the South Lodge Hotel in Horsham.
The black-tie evening
will see guests from across the sporting world gather in aid of
raising funds for the Surrey Going for Gold Charity which supports
the Camberley Judo Club playing squad . British Olympic Association
Director of Elite Performance Sir Clive Woodward and double Olympic
medallist Kate Howey will cast their eye over proceedings and
will be interviewed by Sky Sports’ veteran presenter Richard Keys.
The annual fundraiser
will feature a five-course gourmet dinner and some scintillating
action on the mat as some of Britain’s brightest talents square
off in aid of charity.
Luke Preston, the club’s senior coach and a support coach for
the Great Britain development squad, is behind the event and has
utilised contacts from his own playing career to once again attract
some top opposition.
At the 2009 launch a
Camberley side defeated the Australian national team by winning
five of the seven contests which graced the five-star Pennyhill
Park Hotel.
“We have a long-term
relationship with the Australian team and they’ve used our facility
to train on numerous occasions,” said the Welshman.
“Last year they were
based at Camberley for their World Championship preparations and
so we thought we’d take the chance to do something with them.
“The spectators loved
it; they had a five-course meal, watched some great judo in the
centre of the hall and were treated to a demonstration from former
World Champion Craig Fallon. It was a very unique experience and
we’re hoping to top that this year.”
The 2010 event will
see Camberley battle against a young and talented Welsh team,
as Preston makes the most of his Wrexham roots and friendship
with former international team-mate and now Welsh national coach
Craig Ewers.
“With my links with
Welsh Judo it was a logical move and I was keen to approach Craig.
They have selected some very exciting young players while at Camberley
we also have a very strong field of fighters to choose from.”
The Welsh men’s team
is likely to feature 2010 Junior European Championships participant
Brandon Dodge and brother Curtis, Gary Cole, Kyle Davis and Stephen
Abberley. The seven-man squad could also feature Ruslan Zabalotnij
and Richard Nash.
The female squad is
expected to include 2010 GB World Cup entrant Fiona Jones, cadet
Jade Lewis, a Portugal European Cup silver medallist as well as
Helen Weatherburn, Rachel Piorot and Natalie Powell.
Camberley meanwhile
could field two of Britain’s most formidable judoka’s in 20-time
major medallist Karina Bryant and former World Champion Craig
Fallon who’s now training at the Surrey club.
