Akitas Judo Club to host masterclass with British icon Neil Adams

Akitas Judo Club will be hosting a masterclass with world-renowned British judo icon Neil Adams MBE on Saturday May 21 at Rayleigh Leisure Centre,

Adams, now head coach of the Belgian national team, is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest judoka of all time after a glittering career which saw him capture two Olympic silver medals, five European Championships and one world title.

The 52-year-old from Rugby, Warwickshire, is sought after the world around as a guest instructor and will make his first visit to the highly-regarded Akitas Judo Club a week after taking charge of the Belgian team at the London British Open in Crawley – an event he won eight times.

Akitas Judo Club coach Adam Hutchins said: “We’re aiming for 150 players on each of the two junior mats and 100 seniors. If we can achieve that target then it would be a fantastic showcase for judo in the area.”

The rare opportunity to train with Neil Adams costs only £5 for juniors and £15 for adults. Participation is on a first come first serve basis and payment cannot be accepted after May 16.

From 10:00 – 11:00 juniors under 10 will train with under 16 judoka on the mat from 11:30 – 12:30. Seniors will be in action from 14:00 – 16:00.

The lunch break will provide time for the club to promote May Madness, British Judo’s annual fundraising initiative for clubs. Akitas will be staging a sponsored throw activity and attempt to break the world record for the amount of consecutive throws in one minute which stands at 51.

“Applications to the Guinness Book of Records have already been made and it’s all official now,” said Adam.

“We’re also looking at new records such as ‘highest judo roll’ and waiting to see how these develop. Anyone is welcome to come down and be part of what promises to be a great day of entertainment and the judo will be suitable for people of all abilities.”
