The 2010 Southend-on-Sea
Sports Awards saw judo come to the fore as teenager Charlotte
Newbold won Young Sports Personality of the Year while her club
Akitas were runners-up.
Essex’s own former Paralympic
star, Danny Crates, joined shooter and four-time Commonwealth
medallist James Huckle in honouring Southend’s sporting talent.
Clubmark bronze outfit
Akitas, who train across three venues, were making their inaugural
appearance at the awards after registering last minute entries.
East Essex Triathlon Club
claimed the Community Club of the Year Award with Akitas finishing
second.
Young standout Newbold,
13, a pre-cadet British international, took bronze at the British
Schools in March and repeated that feat at the British Championships
in October.

Club coach Adam Hutchins
said: “It was a great evening for everyone associated with the
club.
“It was our first ever
time at any sports awards and for the club it was a fantastic
triumph to achieve such recognition in our 25th year. For Charlotte
we pushed hard for her to be in the shortlist after her excellent
results this year.
“We've come along with
since moving to Southend just over five years ago. We've also
had a lot of difficulties that we've had to overcome in that time
and so recognition of this type has been fantastic. We’re determined
to get our application in earlier next year and get that number
one spot.”
