Simon Ward presents a diary of the John Davies Western Area International Summer Training Camp 2011

Saturday 13th August – Day One

Judoka began to arrive early into North Devon, as the Second Western Area Summer camp commenced promptly with the first mat session at 6pm.

The first session was set out to test the fundamental abilities of the judoka involving gymnastics, co-ordination, strength, flexibility and team leadership’s skills.

The group then had their first test with six rounds of randori in both ne-waza and tachi waza before we finished at 7.30pm, after being reminded of the strict rules and regulations for the Judoka to follow for the week.

Evening meal was followed by a comfortable evening to settle into their rooms before lights out at 10.30pm.

Sunday 14th August – Day Two

An early 6.55am start; with all Judoka managing to adhere to the rules and turn up on time for the first morning 2km run with hill sprints before breakfast.

The morning mat session was based on movement exercises which progressed into ne-waza drills from a range of varied attacking directions. We finished the morning session with four ne-waza randori contests and a team battle of dodge ball.

Just as the sun came out in the afternoon, the group played a range of team games including Softball and football.

The evening Judo session started at 7pm with a focus on tachi-waza posture and mobility drills which included tandoku-renshu. We then developed that into technique preparation and full nage-komi practice.

This followed with five 4 minute tachi-waza randori. And then a circuit session and shuttle run as some of the group had been late to the session and cheated on the morning run.

Monday 15th August – Day Three

Another early start before breakfast this morning at 6.50am as the Judoka faced a Judo specific circuit session for one hour.

At 10am the Judoka started the day with a challenging game of rugby with a medicine ball. The technical session was based on development of sangaku-jime, with series of movement exercises set to help the judoka understand the key fundamental workings of the sangaku technique. As the morning session developed the technique was starting to take shape as an entry into the roll with tori underneath. The session again finish with some ne-waza randori, a ten minute target was set to see who could win with ten ippons, the highest score in the time frame was Emily Harper with eight.

In the afternoon the group travelled to South Molton to spend some time climbing indoors as rain set in to ruin any plans of outdoor rock climbing. The entire group took up the challenge and completed six difficult and extremely demanding climbing walls. The instructor then got some competition between the groups with some tough physical testing which certainly increased the competitiveness of all the Judoka to be the best.

The evening judo session was a reinforcement of the tachi-waza drills from Monday and moving them forward with extra directionally patterns and nage-komi practice. The session was completed with pylometric jumps and a stretching session.

Tuesday 16th August – Day Four

Yet again we started with a 7am run with the entire group completing a 4km circuit.

Jurgen Klinger was the guest coach during today’s sessions and he run a masterclass session focussing on o-soto-gari. It was an excellent insight into exercises and movement patterns designed to develop the technique. Jurgen then worked at a range of different gripping situations from ukes and extreme stance using the o-soto-gari step patterns linking into combinations.

The afternoon session was a visit to the local Gym where the group were put through a challenging 45 minute high intensity spin class.

Jurgen Klinger ran his second session of the day at 7pm, with a look at some ne-waza situations and turn overs and developing quality randori practice.

Wednesday 17th August – Day Five

Today was England ExCell West training day so we didn’t have a morning run, which meant a welcome lie in for the judoka which was very much appreciated.

The first mat session started at 10am with a focus on tachi-waza uchi-komi drills and nage-komi practice. The second half of the session was lead by Jason Parsons and Alex Paske who both worked on the development of ko-uchi-gari, looking closely at two entry patterns into the technique.

After lunch we returned to the dojo at 2.30 to run a SAQ training circuit and reactions tests with Simon Ward for an hour.

The last mat session of the day started at 4pm with Sandra Klinger running a challenging randori session with a mix of tachi-waza and ne-waza.

The evening BBQ started at 7pm and allowed everyone time to relax and enjoy many fun challenging team games as the sun set on what was a great day’s judo and entertaining night.

Thursday 18th August – Day Six

After a hard days training the day before, we decided that the early morning Judo circuit would be cancelled to allow the judoka to fully recover. So the first mat session stated at 10am with Simon running a ne-waza technical session with a reinforcement of the sangaku roll which Sandra introduced on Monday. Followed by developing a few different rolling shime-waza and looking at the key principles in producing an effective strangle.

A thrilling afternoon of surfing at Westward Ho was set up for the judoka. After a quick lesson on the basics they all headed out to hit the waves and have some fun in the sea.

The evening judo programme started at 7pm with Sandra and Judy splitting the group into three times and setting out a team challenge session with some physical judo games, strength and conditioning tests and a final team randori competition.

Friday 19th August – Day Seven

The final day’s full training started again with a tough morning run at 7am with ten laps on the hill.

In a relaxed end to the final day’s judo the morning session was run by the boys who lead a warm-up and then choose a number of judo games with Sandra adding her knowledge of a better range of games for the group to enjoy.

After lunch the entire group walked into Bideford town for ice cream and a relaxing play in the local park, where all the kids enjoyed playing in the under 12 year old play park..

The final judo session in the evening started with a final exhausting physical circuit before the girls were allowed to conduct the final hour’s judo programme before we all put away the mat area and cleaned up the dojo. This then lead to a few hours for all the judoka to enjoy their final evening together.

Saturday 20th August – Day Eight

The final breakfast before departing at 10am, we arranged a special cooked breakfast for all the judoka, before parents started to arrive to collect their exhausted children.
