PARALYMPIC REPORTS

Monday 20th September 2004

15.00pm: A huge congratulations to Ian Rose who has just won a silver medal in the men's +100kg weight category.  In a close final he was beat by Ilham Zakiyev of Azerbaijan in the third minute by ippon.

1.07pm:  Ian Rose has won the semi final against Akaev of Russia.  With a wazari already on the scoreboard, the final minute brought victory for Ian after a third penalty was given against the Russian, which provided a second wazari to finish the contest. This win guarantees Ian at least a silver medal, hopefully the gold!

10.14am: Ian Rose has won his first fight against Yuong Chiat Looi of Malaysia by ippon after just 11 seconds!

Sunday 19th September 2004

Simon Jackson lost his first fight in the -73kg weight category to Ukrainian Sergiy Sydorenko and immediately launched a sit-down protest at the referee's decision.

He was leading by a koka with just seconds remaining when Sydorenko was awarded a yuko to win the match.

Jackson complained no score should have been given because he was off the mat. Jackson had previously took the lead with a koka.

In the women's -63kg weight category, Maxine Ingrim lost her first against German Silke Huetter. In her second matach - the bronze medal fight - she was thrown for ippon by France's Angelique Quessandier.

Saturday 18th September 2004

Londoner Darren Kail failed to clinch a medal in the men's under-66kg.  A tough draw saw him face Japan's Satoshi Fujimoto in the first round where he lost by 5 yukos.

He was brought through to the repechage - where he had a shot at bronze - but he was beaten by Finland's Jani Kallunki.

BRYANT Karina GBR v BELTRAN Dayma CUB

Britains final chance of a medal in the judo today lies with Camberly Judo Club's Karina Bryant.

Karina's draw was not the best and she faced the strong Cuban in her first fight.

The fight was scrappy with both players having a koka each.  Then 15 seconds before the end Karina received a blow to the knee which seemed to unbalance her and send he to the mat, the cuban was quick to take advantage and applied a hold, it was all over for the Brit.

Beltran has progressed to the semi final which brings Karina down into the repechage with a chance at the bronze.

Thursday 18 August

WILDING Rachel GBR v SAN MIGUEL Esther ESP

What a belter!! Rachel produced a composed performance against the current World bronze medalist from Spain.

In the fourth minute having just evened the scores to a koka and a yuko a piece Rachel countered the Spainiard and produced a loverly Uri-Nage for Ippon.

BJA Chairman, and ex-Olympian Densign White, delighted with the performance said "She deserves 20 points for that throw".

The Olympic road for Rachel will continue to be a tough one as she faces MATROSOVA Anastasiia of the Ukraine who has a good record in this years A Tournament season.

Wednesday 17 August

GORDON Winston GBR v HUIZINGA Mark NED

Winston finishes his first games in 5th place.

GORDON Winston GBR v ZVIADAURI Zurab GEO

What can we say, Winston was the only player with a positive score on the board with a yuko from a good tomoe-nage attack.  Both players were cagey with so much at stake, very quickly the referee decided to wind both players up for passivity.

The Georgian seemed to be content with pushing Winston out of the contest area, again the referee decided to intervene and gave Winston 2 further penalties for stepping out of the area.  These added to the two he had received for passivity and pistol gripping disqualified Winston from the contest.

A very disappointing way for an Olympic semi-final to be decided.

Winston needs to pull himself up from this to fight against HUIZINGA Mark of Holland for the Bronze.

GORDON Winston GBR v HONORATO Carlos Eduardo BRA

The British crowd in Athens are still cheering at an incredible performance from Winston Gordon.

Winston has just beaten a very strong Brazilian putting him into the Semi-finals of the Olympic -90kg category.

The match went to full time with Winston winning with a yuko and 2 kokas.

A strong looking GORDON now faces the toughest contests of his judo career when he enters the arena against the current World silver medallist from Georgia.

GORDON Winston GBR v KELLY Daniel AUS

In his Olympic debut Winston looked impressive scoring two!! Ippons!!

One minute into the fight Winston produces a big throw which sends the Australian flying and is awarded Ippon.  The players not realising Ippon has been called continue and Winston pulls on okuri-eri-jime, KELLY submits and the referee gives Ippon again!  Pity we cant bank the spare Ippon and carry it forward.

HOWEY Kate GBR v ROBERGE Catherine CAN

This contest was a totally different picture to Kate's first.  The match went to full time with neither player gaining a positive score.  The Canadian goes through after Kate was given two shido penalties.

Kate and Winston are today stepping out in front of what looks like the largest British crowd at the Olympic event so far.

Kate is comfortably through to the next round after a win against SALAEVA.

COX Sophie GBR v KYE Sun Hui PKR

What a close match, Sophie certainly gave the World Champion a run for her money making most of the attacks during a tense fight.

The match looked to be going to Golden Score with neither player getting any positive scores.  The match was even at a yuko a piece (both scores received via passivity penalties) Sophie went for an attack and was countered by the Koren with 33 seconds left in normal time.

Although Sophie must be disappointed to be out of the running for a Gold she gave one of the best judoka currently in the world a real battle and was certainly no push over.

Sophie will now face either the Maltese or Russian player in the repechage.

Greek

COX Sophie GBR v BOUKOUVALA Ioulieta GRE

FALLON Craig GBR v FERNANDIS Scott AUS

Craig won this fight in just over 30 seconds with Tai-Otoshi.  He nearly ended the contest 10 seconds earlier with a strong attacking move but the referees called it outside the contest area.

FALLON Craig GBR v ZINTIRIDAS Revazi GRE

Craig looked devastated as he left the contest area having just lost to the Greek player.

Craig was a wazari and yuko up on the Greek player when the British contingent in the crowd roared as what looked like an Ippon for Fallon was not given.

Then in the last 4 seconds of the contest Craig got caught by ZINTIRIDAS for Ippon.

With ZINTITIDAS losing his next contest Craig is now out of the competition.

British hopes now turn to Georgina Singleton who fights in the -52kg category tomorrow.
