In
April 2002 the BJA implemented it’s first official Child Protection
Policy, which was just four pages in total. Now some five years
later the BJA is embarking on the membership consultation stage
for the third version of it’s policies and procedures.
The
sheer quantity and quality of the information now included demonstrates
the journey that that Child Protection has come in the judo community.
There
is such a wealth of documents and resources that the BJA has decided
to publish all the documents under a brand – Safe Landings.
The suite consists of the Child Protection Policies and Procedures,
an toolkit covering practical areas such as safe recruitment and
transportation, and the Safe Landings website (due for launch
Winter 2007).
Whilst
this policy was written with huge help from other sports* it also
draws huge inspiration from the 500 plus judo coaches and volunteers
that have attended the judo specific Safeguarding & Protecting
Children Workshops** injecting the spirit of openness and honestly
that judoka have shown on these workshops.
Whilst
we are pleased that we have captured the views and opinions of
those that have attended our workshops we want to consult and
engage with those of you who we have not as of yet had time to
meet.

You
will find listed below the two documents which make up the BJA's
suite of Child Protection Policies & Procedures. During
the consulation stage they are intentionally unformatted/unbranded
and reflect the draft version of our polices.
Whilst
the obvious basics you would expect to find in the policies are
there and have been approved by the NSPCC we want to include suggestions,
amendments and additions that you as members may have. If you
or your club come up with a great idea it will be included.
The
overriding theme for our Safeguarding Workshops has been ownership
– they are delivered by judo people for judo people. This theology
is now extended to our policies and procedures. We feel that the
membership needs to believe that the policies are written by judo
people for judo people.
All
judoka that submit feedback were entered into a draw for the following
